What is a Chemical Peel?

A Chemical Peel is a chemical solution applied to the face removing the skin's top layers that have been damaged, wrinkled or unevenly pigmented, allowing a new healthier skin to emerge. Chemical peels have been performed for centuries. With more than 1.3 million patients having chemical peels, this procedure was the most commonly performed non-surgical cosmetic procedure in 2001 for both men and women. However, in 2002, Botox became the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure and only 920,340 chemical peels were performed in 2002.

The procedure: Chemical peels differ in ingredients and strength. Depth of peeling achieved also varies according to the amount of time the peel is left on the skin and whether the peel is lightly, heavily or vigorously applied. Anesthesia is required. You may feel a mild tingling or stinging feeling.

Typically, the most superficial peels use alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) like glycolic, lactic or fruit acid. A trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel is stronger with greater depth of peel verses the AHA peels. A single treatment of an AHA peel might give the skin a healthier, radiant look. However, various concentrations of alpha hydroxy acids may be applied weekly or longer intervals to achieve the maximum effect. Mild concentrations alpha hydroxy acids can be combined with a facial cream or wash to use daily.

Your plastic surgeon should decide which chemical or chemical blend is right for you. The chemical peel is applied using a sponge, cotton pad, cotton swab or brush (avoiding the eyes, brows and lips). Patient can immediately return to work and/or normal activities.

Note: Some skin disorders do not react to chemical peeling.
