What are Collagen Injections?

Injectable Zyderm and Zyplast collagen are natural derivates of purified bovine (cow) collagen, which basically replaces the natural collagen skin loses with age. Collagen is injected beneath the skin to plump up creased and sunken areas of the face by filling deep facial wrinkles such as laugh (smile) lines and crow's feet and provides instant results. Collagen can also fill in scars. Injectable bovine collagen in the most popular substance used for soft-tissue augmentation in the US.

FDA Approval Since 1981: Collagen injections were approved by the FDA in 1981. Since then, over 2 million people worldwide have received collagen injections. More than 796,526 people had collagen injections in 2001alone and the ASAPS states collagen to be, "a safe, time-tested and effective treatment."

How collagen is injected: Collagen is injected with a tiny needle into skin depressions. Several injections may be required, depending on the length and depth of the wrinkle and can be completed in less than an hour. Afterwards, patients can return to work and/or other activities.

Maintenance: Additional injections would be necessary every three to six months to maintain results. Patients should discuss maintenance options with their plastic surgeon.

Resurfacing and Facelifts: Collagen and Fat Injections can be performed in conjunction with a resurfacing procedure or facelift.

Risks: Slight bruising. Pre-testing for allergic reaction is recommended by the ASAPS.
