Fat grafting may be used in conjunction with facelifts to fill out laugh lines. Fat grafting may also be used around the eyes, replacing bledpharoplasties. However, patients should be aware the procedure must be done in multiple sessions (one to three sittings 1 to 3 months apart) to get lasting, first-rate results.
Fat grafting has minimum complications compared to other procedures. Risks include fatty cysts (most likely from the surgeon injecting the fat in larger clumps) and possibility of infection (although small). Thus, be sure to find an experienced surgeon if you are considering this or any other plastic surgery procedure. One patient had a case of wound infection. The patient had a root canal a week after the fat grafting and acquired the bacteria during the root canal. So, always notify your doctors of other procedures you are planning on having!
"Successful, permanent fat grafting is challenging to say the least." Says a Plastic Surgeon, who practices cosmetic surgery in San Francisco. While he performs facial fat grafting at his practice, he sees several issues that have yet to be addressed across the board.
"Fat grafting simply should not be oversold or misrepresented to patients," the surgeon says. "A problem with the technique is that it is not realistically presented to patients. Many doctors have presented this as either a one-time, permanent procedure or as a temporary procedure that can be done quickly in the office in which needs to be repeated at multiple intervals."
Donor sites include the knees since do not change much, the abdomen or love handles. I Unfortunately for most women, fat from the hip area does not take well. "Donor fat is most likely to be usable if it comes from an area that has not been liposuctioned before" the surgeon says.
